III. Dissertation and Degree Award
After passing the comprehensive doctoral examination, doctoral students must, under the guidance of their supervisor or supervisory group, conduct literature reviews and in-depth investigations to identify a specific research topic. The timeline for the dissertation proposal defense is determined by the supervisor but must be no less than one year before the dissertation defense application. The proposal should include a literature review, topic selection and its significance, main research content, key features and challenges, expected outcomes, and potential innovations.
The proposal defense will be evaluated by an assessment committee primarily composed of the supervisory group (including at least three doctoral supervisors), with relevant faculty and graduate students encouraged to attend. Interdisciplinary dissertation proposals should invite experts from related disciplines. If major changes are made to the dissertation topic, a new proposal defense is required. Students who fail the proposal defense may reapply within three months.
Writing the doctoral dissertation is the most challenging and original part of the doctoral degree. Through this process, students will develop the ability to formulate research topics, apply theory and skills to practical problems, and generate innovative conclusions. The formatting, printing, and binding requirements for the dissertation shall follow the University of International Business and Economics Graduate Dissertation Writing Standards.
After completing the dissertation, students must participate in a preliminary defense three months prior to the formal dissertation defense application. Upon passing the preliminary defense, students must further revise and improve the dissertation.
Doctoral students may apply for the final dissertation defense only if they meet the following requirements:
Have passed all courses with required grades and earned 25 credits;
Have completed all training components, including the comprehensive doctoral examination and academic reports, and passed the graduation qualification review;
Comply with university regulations on student status and other relevant rules;
Have paid all required tuition and fees.
The dissertation proposal, writing, academic misconduct screening, external review, and defense must strictly follow the relevant regulations of the university’s graduate degree management.
Graduate students who pass the dissertation defense will be awarded a Doctor of Economics degree after review and approval by the School and University Degree Committees.
